Spaced practice is one of the most replicated findings in learning science.
A meta-analysis of 317 experiments found that spreading practice across multiple sessions produces significantly better long-term retention than the same amount of practice crammed together. The effect holds across age groups, subjects, and learning methods — and it's especially relevant for skills that need to become automatic, like phonics decoding.

Students underestimate how much spaced practice helps.
Research found that students consistently felt that cramming felt more effective — yet their actual retention was significantly better when practice was spread out. The lesson: doing a little practice every day feels less productive than it is.

Honest note: The general spacing effect is extremely well-established. There isn't a specific study we've found that measures "tutoring + between-session practice" vs. "tutoring alone" for reading in particular. What we can say: consistent, distributed practice is how skills get consolidated — and the research on tutoring dosage strongly supports more frequent contact with material.
