What the research shows

Students lose roughly one month of learning over summer.

A meta-analysis of 39 studies found that achievement scores declined over summer vacation by approximately one month's worth of school-year learning. Reading loss was most pronounced for lower-income students, while middle-class students tended to hold steady or gain slightly.

Cooper, H., Nye, B., Charlton, K., Lindsay, J., & Greathouse, S. (1996). Review of Educational Research, 66(3), 227–268.

Summer gaps compound year over year.

The Johns Hopkins Beginning School Study followed 790 students for 25 years and found that the achievement gap between higher- and lower-income students accumulated almost entirely during summer months, not during the school year. Both groups learned at similar rates while school was in session. The difference was what happened in June, July, and August, repeated every year.

The problem isn't effort, it's having interesting, at-level materials.

Most parents want to help. The right tools haven't existed.

📚

Generic worksheets don’t fit

"Jan sat on a log." Your child is working on vowel teams. Generic worksheets use whatever patterns they want, not the ones your child is practicing.

😤

Kids resist boring topics

A passage about a dog at the park isn’t motivating. A passage about their favorite sport, animal, or video game? That gets read.

Creating aligned practice takes hours

Finding or writing passages that match a specific phonics scope and sequence is hard. The materials weren’t easily available to parents until now.
